Classification of forest

7 Forest Classification

Classification of forest can be categorized according to characteristics of the change in altitude, the composition of the flora, habitat, climate, soil and biotic. The classification is as follows: -

Ericaceous Forest - Mountain

The forest is located at an altitude beyond 1,500 meters above sea level which contains species of small trees, bent and low, such as Kelat, cooktop monkeys and a variety of bushes, bamboo, ferns and mosses.

Montane Forest - Oak

The forest is located at an altitude of 1,200 to 1,500 meters above sea level with most medium-sized species such as Mempening, Berangan, resin oil and Podo.

Top Route Forest

The forest is located at an altitude of 750 to 1,200 meters above sea level which contains mainly species of hill Meranti and resin oil.

Hill Route Forest

The forest is located at an altitude of 300-750 meters above sea level which is the largest class of forests in Peninsular Malaysia. The main species is Seraya, Keruing and Meranti.

Low Route Forest

The forest is located at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level with a number of dense trees and various types. The main species are Meranti, Balau and Lime.

Peat Swamp Forest

The forest is located behind the mangrove forest towards the ground with peat soil and the water less salty. Species found in this area is Meranti.

Marine Swamp

The forest is located along the muddy sea which have mixed with sea sand tides. The main species is the mangrove.
